Egyptian Watermelons for Export
Egyptian watermelon is an early-summer volume crop with real eating quality: crisp, deep-red flesh, high sugars and the thick rind that survives export handling. Production concentrates in two celebrated zones — the Giza belt and Delta fields that feed the early window, and the Aswan crop from Upper Egypt, where intense southern heat produces some of the earliest, sweetest fruit in the Mediterranean basin.
That staggered geography is the origin advantage: Aswan opens the season weeks ahead of most competitors, Giza and the Delta carry it through mid-summer, and buyers can bridge the gap before Mediterranean and European crops arrive. PEIVANA adds commercial flexibility — mid-size programs, mixed loads with melons or vegetables, and same-day quotes in a category where timing is everything.
Varieties & Grades
We supply striped Crimson-type hybrids and dark-skinned (black) varieties, in seeded and seedless programs. Class 1 fruit is symmetrical, free of sunburn, bruising and hollow heart beyond tolerance, with minimum brix agreed per order — typically 10–12+. Fruit is field-selected by knock and ground-spot maturity, then checked again at the packing point.
Sizes, Packing & Palletization
| Spec | Detail |
|---|---|
| Weight bands | 3–5 kg / 5–8 kg / 8–12 kg per fruit |
| Pack formats | Bulk bins (300–500 kg), cardboard octabins or 3–4 fruit cartons for seedless |
| 40ft reefer payload | Approx. 24–26 MT bulk or binned |
Straw or padding layers are used in bulk stowage; bins and cartons are the standard for supermarket programs.
Season & Availability
The export season runs from April to July: Aswan fruit opens it in April, Giza and Delta volumes peak May–June, and late fields extend supply into July. Early-window bookings should be fixed in winter, as the first Aswan cuts are always oversubscribed.
Logistics & Shipping
Watermelons ship in reefer containers at 10–13°C — cool, never cold, to avoid chilling injury — or in ventilated stowage for very short lanes. Departures from Alexandria, Damietta, Sokhna and Port Said serve the Gulf on services under a week, plus Mediterranean Europe, Asia and Africa. Weight, not space, limits the load, so accurate fruit-size planning per market is part of our job.
Quality & Documentation
Fruit comes from GLOBALG.A.P-certified partner farms in Giza, the Delta and Aswan, handled through HACCP and ISO-certified packing operations. Each shipment carries a phytosanitary certificate and certificate of origin, with brix reports and residue analyses available before loading.
