Egyptian Zucchini: Sizes, Season & Packing

Zucchini is a workhorse of the winter vegetable trade, and Egyptian zucchini export programs feed European and Gulf shelves from October through May — exactly when Spanish supply tightens and prices spike. The product looks simple, but the difference between a repeat program and a one-off shipment comes down to three things: length grading, harvest freshness, and gentle handling of a skin that scratches if you look at it wrong.

PEIVANA, the flexible Egyptian exporter of the PEI Trade family, packs zucchini for retail and wholesale buyers with same-day quotes and mid-size program flexibility out of Alexandria, Damietta, Sokhna and Port Said. This guide gives importers the full working spec.

Varieties and Grades

Egyptian export zucchini is a dark-green, cylindrical hybrid type (light-green types available for regional Arab markets on request). Grading:

  • Class 1: straight, uniform dark green, glossy skin, flower-end clean-cut, free of scratches, scarring and soft spots; stem trimmed to ~1 cm.
  • Class 2: slight curvature or superficial marks; sound flesh — for wholesale and processing.

Sizes & Calibers

Zucchini is graded primarily by length, with diameter as a secondary check:

Grade Length Diameter Typical market
Small / baby 10–14 cm 2–3 cm Premium retail, food service
Medium (core export) 14–18 cm 3–4 cm EU/UK retail standard
Large 18–21 cm 4–5 cm Wholesale, Gulf markets
Extra large 21+ cm 5+ cm Local / processing

The commercial heart of the export range is 14–21 cm; specify your band and tolerance (usually 10% out-of-band) at booking.

Packing Formats

Format Net weight Notes
Open-top carton 5 kg EU standard, single layer aligned
Carton 6–10 kg Wholesale, jumble or layered
Plastic crate 7–10 kg Gulf and regional programs
Flow-pack trays 500 g – 1 kg Retail-ready on request

Cartons are lined to protect the skin; zucchini is never packed over-height, because compression marks show within 48 hours.

Season: October to May

Open-field and low-tunnel plantings give a continuous window from October to May, with peak counter-season volumes December through March. Map it against companion crops on the Egyptian produce seasons calendar.

QC Checkpoints

  • Harvest timing: cut early morning at target length; zucchini oversizes in 24–48 hours, so fields are picked daily.
  • Skin inspection: gloss and scratch check on the line — scarred fruit out.
  • Firmness: flesh must be dense; spongy seed cavities mean over-maturity.
  • Pre-cooling: to 7–8°C within hours of harvest; carriage at +7–8°C, 90–95% RH (chilling-sensitive below 5°C).
  • Residues: MRL certificate per destination market with every program.

Mixed-Container Fit

Zucchini shares the +7–8°C regime with peppers, cucumbers and beans, making it a natural line in a mixed produce container from Egypt. European buyers filling winter gaps typically add 4–6 pallets of zucchini to our Europe counter-season container alongside peppers and spring onions. PEIVANA builds these loads from your pallet plan — no minimum full-container commitment per line.

FAQ

What size zucchini do European retailers specify?
Most EU retail programs run 14–18 cm; wholesale and Gulf buyers often prefer 18–21 cm for weight yield.

How long does Egyptian zucchini keep after arrival?
With an unbroken cold chain, plan on 10–14 days from packing. Zucchini is a rotate-fast product; we schedule weekly sailings to keep shelves in fresh fruit.

Can I combine zucchini with other vegetables in one reefer?
Yes — anything running +7–8°C (peppers, cucumbers, eggplant, beans) mixes cleanly. Avoid co-loading with ethylene-heavy fruit like melons.
