Egyptian Cantaloupes for Export
Egyptian cantaloupes and Galia melons open the Mediterranean melon season: netted, sweet-fleshed fruit grown under low tunnels in the Delta and desert-reclamation farms, cut from March when European supply is still months away. High brix, strong aroma and firm flesh have made the Egyptian spring melon a fixture on Gulf fruit counters and an early-season option for European importers.
The origin advantage is timing plus sunshine: Egypt’s early spring heat ripens melons ahead of Spain and Morocco’s main volumes, letting buyers open the category early at competitive prices. PEIVANA keeps the buying simple — melons pair naturally with watermelons and spring vegetables in mixed containers, mid-size programs suit regional wholesalers, and every enquiry gets a same-day answer.
Varieties & Grades
Our range covers Galia-type melons (netted yellow skin, aromatic pale-green flesh) and Cantaloupe/Charentais types (orange flesh, sutured or netted skin), with new long-shelf-life hybrids for sea programs. Class 1 fruit is well-netted, unblemished, harvested at the maturity stage matching the lane — fuller slip for near markets, firmer cut for longer transits — with minimum brix agreed per program.
Sizes, Packing & Palletization
| Spec | Detail |
|---|---|
| Counts per carton | 4 / 5 / 6 / 7 fruit (approx. 800 g–1.6 kg per fruit) |
| Cartons | 5–6 kg single-layer open-top with paper wraps or liners |
| Pallets per 40ft reefer | 20–24 pallets, approx. 4,000+ cartons |
Season & Availability
The export season runs from March to July, with peak quality and volume April–June. Early-window fruit (March–April) commands the strongest interest from European buyers ahead of local production; Gulf demand holds across the whole season and spikes before Ramadan when it falls in these months.
Logistics & Shipping
Melons ship in reefer containers at 3–6°C depending on variety and ripeness, with controlled venting; they are pre-cooled immediately after harvest. We load from Alexandria, Damietta, Sokhna and Port Said, serving Gulf lanes in under a week and Mediterranean Europe on short services, with Asia and Africa quoted case by case. Melons and watermelons frequently share a booking window for combined programs.
Quality & Documentation
Fruit comes from GLOBALG.A.P-certified partner farms and is packed in HACCP and ISO-certified stations with brix checks at intake and before loading. Shipments carry a phytosanitary certificate and certificate of origin, with residue analysis to destination MRLs available pre-shipment.
