Fresh Zero-Grade Okra: The Premium Pod Guide

In the okra trade, smaller is better — and “zero” is the top of the pyramid. Zero grade okra from Egypt means the smallest, most tender pods, picked young before fiber develops, and it commands the highest price per kilogram of any okra spec. For importers serving South Asian, Middle Eastern and African diaspora retail in Europe and the Gulf, zero-grade is the pod that builds customer loyalty; larger grades fill the price shelf below it.

PEIVANA, the flexible Egyptian exporter of the PEI Trade family, runs fresh okra from May through October as air and fast-sea programs out of Cairo, Alexandria, Damietta, Sokhna and Port Said. This guide explains the grading system, pod specs, packing and the daily-harvest discipline behind a reliable zero-grade supply.

The Okra Grading System

Egyptian okra grading runs by pod length, with the smallest grade labelled zero:

  • Zero (0): the premium spec — tiny, velvety, deep-green pods, fully tender, snapped clean with no fiber. The hardest grade to supply consistently because fields must be picked every single day.
  • Grade 1: small pods, still tender — strong retail spec at a step-down price.
  • Grade 2: medium pods for wholesale and cooking markets.
  • Grade 3+: large pods, mostly local-market and processing.

Sizes & Calibers

Grade Pod length Character Typical market
Zero 2–4 cm Ultra-tender, velvet skin Premium ethnic retail, air programs
Grade 1 4–6 cm Tender, fine ridges Retail, EU/UK/Gulf
Grade 2 6–9 cm Firm, light fiber at cap Wholesale
Grade 3 9+ cm Fibrous Local / processing

Zero-grade tolerance is strict: maximum 10% of pods over-length, no woody tips, no black bruising.

Packing Formats

Format Net weight Notes
Open-top carton 5 kg Export standard, perforated liner
Carton, small 2–3 kg Air programs, premium zero spec
Punnets in carton 250–500 g Retail-ready, label on request
Plastic crate 5–6 kg Regional sea shipments

Okra bruises black at the lightest impact, so zero-grade is packed shallow — never more than 12–15 cm of product depth per carton.

Season: May to October

Okra is Egypt’s summer counter-cycle line: while Europe’s field vegetables peak, okra runs May through October with its best flush June–September. That makes it a valuable slot-filler between winter programs — see the Egyptian produce seasons calendar for the full summer lineup.

QC Checkpoints

  • Daily picking: pods double in size in 24–48 hours; a skipped day destroys the zero grade. Our growers pick contracted fields every morning.
  • Snap test: pods must snap clean — any bend means fiber, and the lot drops a grade.
  • Color and bloom: uniform deep green with intact velvet; shine loss signals age.
  • Bruise inspection at packing — blackened pods removed pod by pod on zero spec.
  • Cold chain: pre-cool to 7–10°C, 90–95% RH; okra is chilling-sensitive below 7°C and shrivels fast above 12°C. Air shipments move within 24 hours of harvest.

Mixed-Container Fit

Zero-grade okra usually flies, but Grades 1–2 ship sea at 7–10°C — the same regime as peppers, zucchini and cucumbers — which makes okra a strong summer line in a mixed produce container from Egypt. Gulf buyers add 2–4 pallets to our Gulf retail mixed container through the summer months, with air-freight zero-grade running in parallel for their premium stores. PEIVANA structures both legs under one supply agreement.

FAQ

What exactly does “zero grade” mean?
It is the smallest commercial grade — pods of roughly 2–4 cm, harvested daily before any fiber forms. It is a size-and-tenderness spec, not a variety.

Why is zero-grade okra more expensive?
Yield per hectare at that pod size is a fraction of larger grades, picking is daily and fully manual, and packing is pod-by-pod. You are paying for labor intensity and rejection rates.

Air or sea for okra?
Zero grade: air, landing within 48 hours of harvest. Grades 1–2 handle 5–7 day sea transits to the Gulf well at 7–10°C.
